Bill Gates grew up in an upper middle-class family with two sisters: Kristianne, who is older, and Libby, who is younger. Their father, William H. Gates, Sr., was a promising, if somewhat shy, law student when he met his future wife, Mary Maxwell. She was an athletic, outgoing student at the University of Washington, actively involved in student affairs and leadership.

Bill Gates displayed academic gifts at a young age which prompted his family to enroll him in a preparatory school Lakeside. He attended Harvard University but showed very little interest in the school and spent a lot of time working on the University’s computers.
Bill Gates and childhood friend Paul Allen saw a cover story on the Altair 8800. It was a computer that was nely developed in 1974 yet there were no companies making software for it. Gates and Allen began working on software for the computer after contacting the company. Bill and Paul secured a software development contract with MITS. Gates left Harvard at the beginning of his junior year to make the leap into the world of business. Along with Paul Allen, he moved to New Mexico at the end of 1975 to produce software for MITS. The following year, they started their own company, Microsoft. No need to explain what happened next!
