She’s a talented signer songwriter and a slue of rappers and producers in the industry have been knocking at her door in hopes of a collabo. She’s worked with Childish Gambino, 2 Chainz, and most recently Drake. The two have collaborated twice after he used her song July and added his own verses to it. Jhene is only 25 years old but draws inspiration from classic old school artist like John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Elton John. Her journey from singing in a mediocre girl group to being hailed by music critics as the best new artist of 2013 has been long and filled with hurdles. With her new EP finally released Sail out and a record deal with Def Jam worth $2.5 million Jhene is looking to be the next big thing in music.
Jhene Aiko was born in Los Angeles California. She got her start in the music industry with Epic records. Her older sisters were in a girl group called Gyrl that was signed to Epic. The act was associated with B2K since Chris Stokes managed both acts. Stokes began developing Aiko as a solo act when she was only 5 years old. Epic later gave her a deal when she was 14 years old. She was signed after an acapella performance and went on tour with B2K the following year. After the fall of B2K Chris Stokes other artist suffered tremendously. The label put Jhene’s album on hold and later dropped her from the label.
With a hiatus from the game she returned releasing music of her own as an independent artist. Music producer and manager No. I.D. took notice of her and signed a joint venture deal with his label Imprint and Def Jam. In 2013 she dropped her first EP Sail Out. The EP was projected to sell 30,000 copies in the first week landing at number 15.
