Tami Roman is the brash and sometimes abrasive star of VH1’s Basketball Wives. The show is in it’s 5th season and stars Evelyn Lozada, Suzie Ketcham, Shaunie O’neal and Tasha Marbury. Due to it’s popularity Tami and the other cast members demanded a pay raise and as a result she is paid $400 thousand this season. Tami was criticized for her comments and altercations with some of the former cast members Kesha Nichols and a face punch to Meeka Claxton. But her confrontations has bought the series over 4.2 million viewers per episode. Despite her tough exterior Tami had a humble and rough upbringing.
Tamisha Akbar was born April 17th 1970 in Mount Vernon New York. Her mother Nadine Akbar was only 15 years old when she gave birth to her. She had a close relationship to her mother who she considered a sister and best friend. Her mother raised her own her own after Tami’s father left and they were forced to sleep on the streets when she was in high school. They lived in her mother’s car until she went to college. Her mother passed away in 2013.
Tami was raised in a Muslim household but switched to Buddahism when she graduated from Howard University. She also channeled her pain and anguish into singing. She joined a girl group called Reality with females she went to Howard with. Growing up she was forced to be around a number of drug addicts, many of them caught HIV from sharing drug needles. This experience lead Tami to work as an AIDS specialist. At 22 years old she starred in the Reality series Real World Los Angeles in 1993. She later married Kenny Anderson a year later. The couple had two children together and divorced in 2001. He was ordered by the courts to pay Tami $8,500 a month in child support. After failing to make payments for 5 years the courts issued he pay Tami $800K in back child support or go to prison.
After appearing on Basketball Wives she has expanded her career to acting appearing in the TV One series Belle’s. She also has a book deal worth $1 million. She is currently working on the advice book on teaching women how to keep their men!
